BIG THANK YOU FROM GRACE BLACK

Many thanks for the piece about me in your latest newsletter. I now have my CDs and I am selling them for £10 each  - £5 going to Cancer Research UK and £5 coming to me to recover all the money that I have spent on the recording, pressing, licensing, marketing and PR . I sold just over 100 before Christmas which means a cheque for at least £500 to Cancer Research UK before the end of last  year. I have 1000 copies in total so if I can continue to sell them at gigs over next year the charity will end up getting £5000.  As well as myspace I now have a website www.graceblackmusic.com . Please contact Grace for information on another CD launch date in Edinburgh and if you’d like a copy.

DEBRA SALEM WINS "DANNY" AWARD

Yes, former student Debra Salem has just won the much-coveted “Danny” award at Celtic Connections 2008! The award is in memory of Danny Kyle. Debra was performing on the Open Stage at this year’s event. As well as the award she also gets a “proper” support gig next year with her Jazz / folk band.  Well done Debra!

MATT ROUGHLY

ACCEPTED FOR NATIONAL YOUTH CHOIR OF GREAT BRITAIN

For all those who were at the 2007 workshop, I’m sure you’ll be interested to know that Matt is doing really well.  He is still with WYJO and they are going on a tour to Spain this Easter.  He has also been accepted to the National Youth Choir of Great Britain - slightly different from jazz but his mum informs us he’s enjoyed being in choirs since he was young(er) and so thought he would apply.  His mum also says that since the course last year he has gained so much confidence and always seems to have a gig lined up.

WYJO will be performing with the wonderful trombonist and composer Dennis Rollins at Wigan Jazz Festival in July. Other guests at this year’s festival will include our patron Liane Carroll.
